The honest comparison

Disposable cameras, a videographer, or guest camera hire?

Three honest routes to capturing a wedding or party, and each one wins in different situations. Here is the straight comparison with the numbers in it, so you can pick the right one. Even if it isn’t us.

From £170

Guest camera hire, all in — ten cameras £245. How the three compare, below.

The comparison

Ten tables, three ways.

Priced like for like: the disposables column includes developing and scanning, because scanning is the step that turns film into the files you actually get.

UK average; typical range £500–£2,500
What you get Up to ~5,000 photos and/or hours of guest-shot video clips, all raw, all yours ~270 photos maximum (27 exposures × 10), no video A crafted 5–10 minute highlights film, professionally shot and edited
Point of view Guests’, candid stills and video, no screens so nobody plays director Guests’, candid but photo-only, and film quality is a lottery in low light A professional outsider’s: beautiful, but posed moments dominate
Effort afterwards None. A courier collects the kit from any address you choose; gallery live the day it reaches us Collect every camera, post rolls to a lab, wait, pay per roll, scan None. The videographer handles everything
Risk Guest-shot footage is raw and imperfect by design. That is the charm, but it isn’t cinema Blank or fogged rolls, lost cameras, blurry indoor shots Cost; one perspective; often booked long in advance

We no longer quote a price for ten disposables: what they cost depends entirely on which kit you buy and which lab you use, and any single figure we picked would flatter us.

Where each one honestly wins

Two of these three are sometimes the right answer.

Book a videographer when…

You want a guaranteed, cinematic record of the key moments: vows, speeches, first dance, professionally framed and edited. Nothing else does that. If the film matters more than anything, spend the £1,514. Many couples run guest cameras alongside one for the moments the pro never sees.

Buy disposables when…

It’s a small gathering, £40–£80 covers it, and a handful of grainy prints is the goal. Just budget the faff honestly: collecting the cameras at midnight, posting the rolls, and paying per-roll development for however many come back.

Hire guest cameras when…

You want the whole day from the inside: stills and video, up to about 5,000 shots, no film to develop, no phones in the air, and everything back in one private gallery the day your kit lands with us. One case, one gallery. Packs from £170, posted anywhere in the UK.

The questions this comparison raises.

Is guest camera hire cheaper than a wedding videographer?

Far cheaper, but they’re different things. The UK average for a professional wedding videographer is £1,514 (typical range £500–£2,500) and buys a crafted, guaranteed highlights film. Guest camera hire is £170 to £320 all in and buys the candid version of the day your guests saw. Plenty of couples book both.

How does it compare with disposable cameras?

They are cheap to buy and expensive in effort. Ten disposables gives you roughly 270 photos at most, no video, and a flash that gives up past the far side of a table — then you collect every camera at midnight, post the rolls to a lab, pay per roll and wait. Ten of ours is £245 all in for about 5,000 photos of capacity, a proper flash on every camera, a courier collection from any address you choose, and a private gallery live the day your kit lands back with us.

How much effort is it afterwards?

None. A courier collects the kit the day after your event, from any address you choose, and the private gallery follows. There’s no film to post to a lab and nothing to pay per roll.

When is a videographer the right choice?

When you want a guaranteed, cinematic record of the key moments: vows, speeches, first dance, professionally framed and edited. Nothing else does that. Many couples run guest cameras alongside one for the moments the pro never sees.

What you hire

Hard cases. Everything in them, charged and checked.

The third option in the table above, photographed. Neither has a screen on the back, and neither needs developing — that is the whole difference from a disposable.
